P2L for Antenna Filter Manufacturing

For an Austrian manufacturer of high frequency products, InSystems Automation has equipped an assembly workstation with eight Pick-2-Light sensors. The customer is specialized in the development and production of components for antenna systems and manufactures three different antenna filters at the site.

The aim of the project was to make the production line of modules with multiple use more efficient and to facilitate material removal for the employees. The Pick-2-Light technology made it possible to automate the processes.

Initial situation & project description:

Prior to the changeover to Pick-2-Light technology, the antenna filters were manufactured at a manual workstation where boxes of different colors were located. Complications almost never occurred during manual production. However, the sorting of the components was very high and required the employee to be familiar with the color system.

The future assembly station is integrated into a production line and will be operated by a worker. On one side there is a turntable that takes the components from the conveyor system and on the other side there is a material supply arm from ITEM, on which the P2L sensors are mounted. In the middle area is the work surface. In total, the assembly workstation has 12 KLT containers. Up to now, the workstation has been equipped by the assembler himself. However, the assembly material is stored directly next door in a Kanban rack. The production of the antenna filters takes place at 16 different workstations.

Advantages of the assembly workstation

  • Great flexibility for many product variants with maximum quality assurance through pick-to-light guidance and process data logging.
  • Efficient assembly, as search times are considerably reduced by optimizing picking sequences and assembly processes.
  • Minimization of changeover times, through simple exchange of parts containers and updating of the container management. Further, assembly sequences are automatically taken into account by the intelligent material flow computer.
  • The flexible and modular assembly system can be adapted to customer requirements at any time and enables even manual production to remain competitive.
